Genre shock! Classically trained vocalist, mezzo-soprano eileen ruby is stepping outside the box to bring us a concert of folk, jazz, and jam-band tunes about the weather, climate change, and more. We will perform Michael Nix's setting of "Three American Folk Songs" for mezzo-soprano and classical guitar.

She will be joined by guitarists Michael Nix, Malgorzata Lach, Niko Stathis, and Gregory Eichler, with Judith Bruneau on percussion.  Songs by Joni Mitchell, Janis Joplin, Laura Nyro, and the Grateful Dead.

Eileen Ruby, mezzo soprano, and Michael Nix, banjar, will perform "Ring the Banjar! Music for voice and seven-string banjo.

 The performance include period parlor songs published for seven string banjo played on an 1880 English fretless banjo, African American spirituals, played on a fretless gourd banjo, Stephen Foster’s own arrangements for guitar, and modern compositions by Nix for the Banjar, a modern seven string classical banjo.

 

Each semester, the HCC Music Department runs a series of free presentations, lectures and performances open to the campus and community.

The Smithsonian Institution Archives and Special Collections Council, the Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives Conference DC and Maryland Caucuses, and the National Archives Assembly invite archivists and musicians, dancers, storytellers, and visual and performing artists to celebrate American Archives Month with us at the 2017 Archives Fair.

This year’s theme - Performance and Preservation - highlights the ways in which the preservation of archival collections translates into the preservation of culture through the performance and artistry of individuals and communities across the United States and around the world. This year’s host, the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, will provide the platform to share archival work and performance art and engage in a dialogue with archival colleagues and the general public.
